Services Offered

Lymphatic and venous disorders require care tailored to the source of swelling, the condition of the tissues, and the patient’s overall health. Diagnosis may involve a detailed medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic imaging, while treatment can combine hands-on therapy, compression, education, and long-term management strategies.

At the Lymphedema Center in Santa Monica, Dr. Emily Iker provides medically guided services for patients with lymphedema, lipedema, phlebo-lymphedema, and related swelling conditions. With more than 30 years of focused experience, she uses clinical findings and diagnostic ultrasonography to develop recommendations suited to each patient’s symptoms, mobility, medical risks, and daily needs.

How Do Treatment Plans Differ by Condition?

The diagnosis influences which therapies may be useful, which precautions are necessary, and whether other specialists should be involved.

Ultrasound Assessment & Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasonography uses sound waves to examine tissue thickness, fluid accumulation, fibrosis, and other changes beneath the skin. Dr. Iker interprets ultrasound findings alongside the patient’s history and physical examination, and may recommend venous ultrasound or additional testing when vascular disease is suspected.

Individualized Treatment Plans

No single treatment approach is appropriate for every lymphatic or swelling disorder. Dr. Iker creates individualized plans based on the diagnosis, symptom severity, tissue condition, circulation, mobility, age, medical history, and the ability to maintain care at home.

Pneumatic Compression Device Treatment

Pneumatic compression uses controlled, sequential pressure to help support the movement of fluid through the affected area. During treatment, an inflatable compression garment is connected to a pneumatic device. Chambers within the garment inflate and release in sequence, applying pressure along the limb to support lymphatic and venous return.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle, specialized technique intended to encourage fluid movement through available lymphatic pathways. When medically appropriate, MLD may be incorporated with compression, movement, skin care, and other strategies rather than used as a stand-alone treatment.

Why Choose the Lymphedema Center for Lymphatic Services?

The Lymphedema Center is an LE&RN-designated Center of Excellence dedicated to the evaluation and long-term management of lymphatic disorders. Dr. Iker brings extensive clinical experience to conditions that can be difficult to distinguish, including lymphedema, lipedema, phlebo-lymphedema, venous insufficiency, and unexplained limb swelling.

Her approach connects diagnosis directly to treatment planning. Rather than recommending compression or manual therapy based on swelling alone, she considers tissue changes, circulation, pain, mobility, skin health, and overlapping medical conditions. Patients receive clear explanations and practical recommendations designed to support symptom control, function, and sustainable care at home.
