Conditions Treated in Santa Monica, CA

Persistent swelling, disproportionate fatty tissue, pain, heaviness, and changes in limb size can result from several different medical conditions. Although these disorders may share certain symptoms, they do not always involve the same underlying processes or require the same approach to care. An accurate diagnosis is essential for distinguishing lymphatic dysfunction from venous disease, adipose tissue disorders, and other causes of swelling.

At the Lymphedema Center in Santa Monica, Dr. Emily Iker evaluates adults and children with complex lymphatic, venous, and related tissue conditions. For more than 30 years, she has provided medically guided care based on each patient’s history, symptoms, physical findings, functional needs, and, when appropriate, diagnostic ultrasonography. Treatment recommendations are individualized rather than determined solely by swelling.

Lymphatic, Venous, and Swelling Conditions We Treat

Lymphedema

Lymphedema occurs when impaired lymphatic drainage causes fluid to accumulate in the tissues. It may lead to persistent swelling, heaviness, skin changes, fibrosis, reduced mobility, or recurrent infections.

Phlebo-Lymphedema

Phlebo-lymphedema develops when chronic venous insufficiency places enough strain on the lymphatic system to impair drainage. Care may address lymphatic swelling while coordinating vascular evaluation when needed.

Lipedema

Lipedema causes a symmetrical buildup of painful or tender fatty tissue, usually in the legs and sometimes the arms. The hands and feet are typically spared, and easy bruising, heaviness, or secondary lymphatic swelling may occur.

Limb Swelling

Arm or leg swelling can result from lymphatic dysfunction, venous disease, injury, infection, medication use, limited mobility, or systemic illness. A thorough evaluation helps identify the cause and determine whether lymphatic treatment is appropriate.

Venous Insufficiency

Venous insufficiency occurs when damaged or weakened vein valves allow blood to pool in the lower legs. This may cause swelling, aching, skin discoloration, or wounds and can eventually contribute to lymphatic dysfunction.

Pediatric Swelling Conditions

Children may develop swelling because of primary lymphedema, vascular or lymphatic malformations, genetic conditions, surgery, trauma, or infection. Treatment planning considers growth, development, daily activities, and family involvement.

Geriatric Swelling Conditions

Swelling in older adults may involve reduced mobility, venous disease, chronic illness, medication use, or age-related lymphatic changes. Recommendations are adapted to concerns such as fragile skin, balance, strength, wounds, and caregiver support.

Dercum’s Disease

Dercum’s disease is a rare condition involving painful fatty growths or widespread tenderness in adipose tissue. Lymphatic care may help manage associated swelling, although it does not remove the abnormal fatty tissue.

Madelung’s Disease

Madelung’s disease causes generally painless, symmetrical fatty deposits in the neck, shoulders, arms, and trunk. Evaluation can identify associated swelling and determine when surgical, metabolic, or other specialty care may be appropriate.

Why Choose the Lymphedema Center for Swelling Conditions?

The Lymphedema Center is an LE&RN-designated Center of Excellence devoted to diagnosing and managing lymphatic disorders. Dr. Iker combines extensive clinical experience with focused knowledge of lymphedema, lipedema, venous-lymphatic disease, and less common adipose tissue conditions. Her pioneering research has also helped advance the use of diagnostic ultrasonography in assessing tissue changes associated with lymphedema and lipedema.

Each evaluation considers more than the size of the affected area. Dr. Iker examines the distribution and character of swelling, skin and tissue changes, circulation, pain, mobility, medical risks, and the possibility of overlapping conditions. When care is appropriate, an individualized plan may include manual lymphatic drainage, movement, skin care, pneumatic compression, or carefully selected compression garments, including the practice’s FDA-approved compression sleeve design when suitable.
